Nokia Uber-smartphone N900 previewed

RX-51 aka Nokia N900 “Rover” is a smartphone and will be the first in Nokia’s new line of high-end devices based on the Maemo OS. A Russian website presents photos and screenshots galore.
Nokia’s new smartphone flagship is expected to be officially unveiled in a few weeks at Nokia World. A prototype somehow found its way to Mobile Review, and they have taken a close look at it. We can be sure now RX-51 is not just a new Internet tablet continuing the line of N770 / N800 / N810. It is a real smartphone running the Linux-based Maemo 5, witch was developed under the codename Freemantle.
Nokia will not ditch its Symbian OS as was widely reported. Instead, S60 will be positioned for mid-level smartphones, while Maemo phones are going to rival Apple’s Iphone as well as the Palm Pre.
Not many new specs, but like Palm Pre the upcoming Maemo smartphone is equipped with an ARM Cortex-8 chip running at an unknown speed. Not so much applause for its resistive touchscreen. All in all, the phone is said to have “a build quality on par with that of the Nokia E75″.
RX-51 is to be expected late in 2009 and will cost about 550 Euro in the unlocked version without subsidies.
