Mercedes gullwing sports car SLS goes electric

Mercedes SLSThe SLS eDrive is a plug-in electric version of the upcoming SLS model, to be developed by Daimler owned tuning company AMG.

The SLS with its typical gullwing doors will be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt motor show. The AMG produced eDrive version will have four electric engines near the wheels. This means all-wheel drive, as each wheel will be actuated by its own engine. The battery pack contains three lithium-ion batteries to be placed in different areas of the car for better weight distribution. The SLS eDrive will have a range of about 100 miles on a single charge which may need 6 to 8 hours. The Mercedes roadster accelerates 0-62mph in less than 4 seconds and will have a top speed of 120mph or more.

No price yet, of course. You may ask again in 2015 – the year the SLS eDrive will eventually go in limited production.
