Bundeskartellamt, watchdog for fair competition, is investigating Google for unfair practices following complaints from German publishers, an online maps service and competitor Microsoft.

The agency did not (yet) accept the publisher’s complaints which echo sentiments we all heard from media mogul Rupert Murdoch. They would like to get a lot of money from Google for “stealing our content” and would also like to have some influence on search results. Online maps service Euro-Cities AG would like to have Google investigated not liking the fact Google Maps are free of charge.

An investigation was now essentially prompted by Microsoft’s complaints, which is a complicated story in itself. There was a first Microsoft complaint claiming abuse of monopoly by Google. The agency did not follow on this complaint, though.

In a second complaint Microsoft claimed Google was annoyed about the first complaint and for this reason stopped negotiating the extension of an advertising contract with shopping portal Ciao which was acquired by Microsoft. If proven, this could violate German antitrust law which explicitly forbids causing business disadvantages to competitors who filed an antitrust complaint.

It is an official investigation now albeit a minor one, though it theoretically still could result in a fine of several millions Euro.

Having been surpassed by Googles Nexus One, Motorola tries hard to stay ahead. Its third Android phone has some nice surprises up its sleeve..

Backflip doesn’t get bigger, as previously assumed, but more versatile. It is more compact than Motorola Droid, still sports a physical keyboard of good size and quality. Yet it is neither a slider nor a traditional clamshell.

Actually the keyboard is reverse flipped so it is on the back of the closed phone. This means it can open into “tabletop” mode and present itself like a digital picture frame or an alarm clock.

Another surprise is a touch sensitive trackpad on the display’s backside. It allows to surf the web or the phone’s home screens without obscuring the display. Sounds a bit awkward but seems to be quite useful as seen in PhoneScoops hands-on video.

The screen is 3.1 inch, accompanied by all the goodies in this Android class: Wi Fi, 3G, 5 megapixel cam, GPS, Bluetooth stereo, microSD slot, 3.5mm headset jack. Motorola didn’t want to disclose the chip and its speed yet.

Backflip is to debut in the first quarter of 2010 in Europe, Asia and North America.

Analysts and rumor sites pretend to know more.

Trip Chowdhry from Global Equities Research cites sources indicating an Android phone with OLED display and physical keyboard. It may run “Google experiences” instead of Motorolas own user interface Motoblur. A second Android phone may also sport an OLED screen but get along without a physical keyboard and rely on a virtual keyboard only.

This seems to be supported by a vague rumor from a Chinese tech site which also presents an incomplete rendering. Mirage / Shadow are supposedly the names for new Motos. The specs sound record-breaking: HDMI port, 8 megapixel camera, 1080p video playback, yet to be only 9mm thick. Most unbelievable is a 4.3 inch display (800×484 pixel resolution) which other vendors would like to call a tablet. Motorola Mirage / Shadow is said to be launched in the first half of 2010.

We should know more on January 6 …

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency seriously wants somebody to build it, and preferably sooner than later. Project Transformer (TX) starts on January 14, 2010.

DARPA invites industry and research community to a TX Proposers’ Day Workshop. The agency already has a clear vision of the cars and their flying functionality:

“The objective of the Transformer (TX) program is to demonstrate a 1 to 4 person transportation vehicle that can drive and fly, thus enabling the warfighter to avoid water, difficult terrain, and road obstructions as well as IED and ambush threats. The vehicle will be capable of driving on prepared surface and light off-road conditions, while flight functionality will require Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL).”

Haven’t we seen flying cars already? For years companies have been promoting their flying cars and even published demo videos. Terrafugia, Moller International, Urban Aeronautics and PAL V Europe, just to name some of them. But they are not selling them yet, maybe never. Terrafugia promises to take its “street-legal airplane” to the streets in 2011, and the street price will supposedly be less than $200.000. Also in 2011 the PAL V One (as seen in the illustration above) is going to fly over Europe, price not yet known.

With the TX program DARPA wants companies and researchers to provide more precise information:

“1) Develop a robust vehicle design that maximizes military utility at a reasonable cost, 2) Identify and mature the critical enabling technologies necessary to vehicle development, and 3) Build a single prototype vehicle that demonstrates the program goals through ground and flight tests.”

2010 is going to be the year of the tablet, with or without an Apple tablet. Following its Vega tablet ICD announces a more compact 7-inch-model running Googles Android OS.

The bigger Vega tablet with display sizes up to 15″ was first shown off by Nvidia boss Jen-Hsun Huang and led to speculations about being the mystical Apple tablet. But it was soon to be unmasked as a tablet running Android 2.0 “Éclair”.

The more compact Ultra is also based on Nvidia’s Tegra platform including 1 GHz chip Tegra T20, fast graphics, 256 MB DDR and 512 MB NAND Flash. Mass storage is 4 GB and can be expanded with Micro SD cards. The tablet also includes FM radio, dual digital microphones, 3.5 mm audio jack, USB, Bluetooth, WLAN, 1.3 MB video camera, accelerometer and ambient light sensor. Cellular, 2g/3g Data and GPS are optional.

The resistive touchscreen (optionally capacitive) has a resolution of 800×480 (optionally 1024×600). Its Mini HDMI port reveals the Ultra is not only meant to be a surf tablet but also a media tablet able to display HD video on any HDMI TV or anywhere on its own display. ICD promises a minimum 4 hours of battery life and 2 hours to charge.

With its size of 186mm x 158mm x 18mm the Ultra tablet weighs about 600g. It could be sold for about $250, there may even be a subsidized version for free from mobile carriers.

Apple shocked by nudity?

The app was offered by a well known German news magazine and presented a small touch of nudity. Too much for Apple, though. After more than 380.000 downloads Apple’s censors pulled the plug and deleted the app from its app store.

Apple is expanding its censorship aspirations internationally. It followed the well known ritual: Censorship without any communication in advance. The inevitable public uproar Apple had many reasons to expect. And finally Apple retreating and again offering the app, mostly without any public statement.

It happened with Ninjawords, a dictionary which contained no more “urban slang” than other respected dictionaries. It happened with Bopple Rep because of its funny cartoon drawings depicting members of congress. Apple considered these benign caricatures “content that ridicules public figures”, therefore being “defamatory” and in violation of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement.

The app from German magazine Stern (meaning “star”) was pulled because of some light nudity. Gruner+Jahr, one of Germany’s leading magazine publishers, confirmed “different opinions about erotic illustrations”:

“But as we don’t want to let the situation escalate we are in talks with Apple about other content which may be found ethically offensive. But it is really annoying the app was deleted without any announcement. Also, the debate about scantily dressed women seems to be lacking in practical relevance.”

Censorship has never been a practical matter, as Apple may realize one day.

While Nokia is officially presenting its phone gadgets at Nokia World 09 in Stuttgart, Germany, its new smartphone flagship N900 has already been sighted in the wild. Italian Nokia fans show off its hardware, user interface and touch gestures.

This hands-on-video originates from Kiamanokia.it – “Il blog dei Nokia Lovers”. It was their mission to get a pre-production unit and present it to the world.

Passionately they are praising the virtues of Linux-based Maemo 5 OS. They are obviously thrilled by N900 hardware, give us a glimpse of its inside and demonstrate the GUI with multi-desktop and Flash-supporting browser.

The zoom function seems to be even more intuitive than the Iphone’s pinch-zoom-gestures. Slightly rotating a finger zooms in and out. It looks as easy as if Steve Jobs’ dreams had come true. And it doesn’t need two fingers, just one. Take that, Apple!

Also known as RX-51 or “Rover”, N900 is now officially confirmed as a smartphone, a surf tablet and more. It runs the Linux-based Maemo 5 OS and will be offered starting in October.

We knew it for months, but today Nokia finally confirmed it. More details will come out next week at Nokia World in Stuttgart, Germany.

The 3.5 inch touch screen is a bit smaller compared to Internet tablets N770 / N800 / N810. It has grown in features to be Nokia’s first high-end smartphone based on Maemo 5. A Mozilla browser and support for Adobe Flash 9.4 should add to a desktop like surfing experience.

This does not mean Nokia is ditching Symbian anytime soon. The company instead will deploy Symbian S60 in a broad variety of mid-range handsets. Nokia obviously wants to support both operating systems for quite some time and promises to make it easy for developers to write applications for both.

N900 looks strikingly similar to its Symbian siblings N97 and the upcoming compact version Nokia N97 Mini. But Nokia executive vice president insists it is much more than just a phone:

“The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo, and we’ll continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the Internet and the mobile phone.”

In a video demo proud and happy Finns are showing off the touch screen GUI including multiple desktops, Dashboard and simple finger gestures for zooming in and zooming out.

N900 is expected to carry a price tag of 700 $ when launched in selected markets in October.

Since Apple dismissed the case of an exploding Iphone as an “isolated incident” more reports are surfacing about similar incidents. French consumer safety agency DGCCRF is investigating the cases.

Daily newspaper Nouvel Observateur today counted 11 reports about exploding / imploding / or whatever Iphones already published in French media.

The number of these incidents may actually be much higher as Apple tends to require the signing of a strict confidentiality agreement if anybody approaches them about compensation or just getting the money back for a faulty product. The London Times reported about such a case earlier this month when an Ipod Touch exploded in Liverpool.

French reports seem to indicate Iphones may “self-destruct” in everyday situations without heavy usage. Rolland Caufman, an 80-year-old pensioner from Paris suburb Noisy-le-Sec had bought an Iphone just a week ago and went for his daily shopping routine, the Iphone in his left pocket:

“I suddenly felt it heat up and start vibrating – even though I never use the vibrate setting. I took it out of my pocket and held it to my ear – and saw the screen crack up like a car windscreen.”

In the most sincere case reported up to now security guard Yassine Bouhadi was hit in the eye with a glass shard during a similar Iphone incident. As incidents were reported from other countries as well the European Commission has already asked all EU members to inform about more problems under RAPEX, the EU rapid alert system for dangerous consumer products.

A Russian website presents photos and screenshots galore.

Nokia’s new smartphone flagship is expected to be officially unveiled in a few weeks at Nokia World. A prototype somehow found its way to Mobile Review, and they have taken a close look at it. We can be sure now RX-51 is not just a new Internet tablet continuing the line of N770 / N800 / N810. It is a real smartphone running the Linux-based Maemo 5, witch was developed under the codename Freemantle.

Nokia will not ditch its Symbian OS as was widely reported. Instead, S60 will be positioned for mid-level smartphones, while Maemo phones are going to rival Apple’s Iphone as well as the Palm Pre.

Not many new specs, but like Palm Pre the upcoming Maemo smartphone is equipped with an ARM Cortex-8 chip running at an unknown speed. Not so much applause for its resistive touchscreen. All in all, the phone is said to have “a build quality on par with that of the Nokia E75″.

RX-51 is to be expected late in 2009 and will cost about 550 Euro in the unlocked version without subsidies.

With prices starting at 220 $ the OLED touchscreen player will be cheaper than its rival Ipod Touch. Microsoft also plans to sell Zune HD outside of the US.

The Zune 16 GB version in black will be priced 220 $, while a 32 GB version in platinum color will come with a 290 $ price tag. Microsoft is significantly undercutting the prices for Apples Ipod Touch which are 80 / 100 $ more expensive in comparable configurations.

Nvidias Tegra chip allows the Zune HD to display 720p video, but it needs an optional dock for the output via HDMI. It also offers HD (high-definition) radio. The web browser was developed by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer people but looks a lot like the Apple Safari browser for Iphone / Ipod Touch. It even offers the same multi-touch gestures like pinching to zoom in.

The Zune Marketplace is accessible via the integrated Wi-Fi and allows Zune Pass subscribers to stream songs directly without having to wait for a complete download.

Unlike earlier Zune generations Microsoft plans to offer Zune HD in other countries as well, but “a bit later”, as Zune “marketing guru” Brian Seitz put it. Before launching the Zune HD internationally Microsoft wants to establish the Zune Video Marketplace in 18 different regions via Xbox Live as a “premium video experience”, the Microsoft representative told MP3 Insider, a Cnet podcast. He declined to give the launch dates or name any countries.

The Finnish handset maker tries different routes. While staying “fully committed” to the Symbian OS, it will use Linux-based Maemo for “high performance mobile devices”. At the same time a Microsoft-Nokia alliance is forming to build a mobile version of Microsoft Office for Nokia’s smartphones.

Nokia was quick to assure it is not ditching Symbian, as some reports seemed to suggest. (This happened because of TechCrunch Europe misinterpreting a Financial Times Deutschland report. Actually the German financial daily had said Nokia was “losing confidence in Symbian” and favoring Maemo for upcoming high-end smartphones. The TechCrunch story by Markus Goebel falsely reported this as “Nokia ditching Symbian for Maemo, German FT reports”.)

But Nokia will not really ditch Symbian, as our own story accurately said. Nokia emphasized this today:

“We absolutely remain committed to Symbian and S60. Symbian remains our choice for smartphones and we’ll continue to see enhancements that further the value and experiences on this platform.”

Seems like a very sincere statement, but the same spokesperson made also clear this is only part of the truth:

“However, recognizing that the value we bring to the consumer is increasingly represented through software, there is logically not just one software environment that fits all consumer and market needs. In addition, as we’ve stated before, we also continue to explore opportunities around a new class of devices that we see as the next segment of high performance mobile devices. Maemo is very much part of that thinking but of course there’s nothing new to announce in this regard.”

Not yet officially announced is Nokia’s RX-51, that already passed through the FCC and is expected to be offered by T-Mobile. It may be an Internet tablet powered by Maemo OS, but at the same time it looks like a high-end version of the Nokia smartphone N97. And why should it have GSM / GPRS / EDGE and WCDMA if is not going to be used as a mobile phone?

In related news Wall Street Journal reports about an alliance between Microsoft and Nokia to be officially announced today. It is not about Nokia building Windows Mobile phones as some people assumed. Actually Microsoft will make mobile versions of its Office applications to run on Nokia smartphones. This is not really exciting as Microsoft already offers Pocket Office for Windows Mobile while other companies developed Office-compatible apps for Blackberrys as well as Symbian phones.
